and the winner is...

I have picked a book. It's called "The Scientists" and is a large and long book on the history of science. Yes, nerdy, I know. I read it a couple years ago and it took me nearly all summer to get through it all.

The 2nd book is a paperback copy of Les Liasons Dangereuses. It's actually in English, and is the book off of which the movie Cruel Intentions is based. It is my trashy novel to be traded in at the book trading opportunities advertised by several hostels.

I packed tonight... only to discover that the backpack I bought, while holding everything I need to take and only weighing 23 lbs while fully loaded, does not leave me any room to bring any souvenirs home. Mom and I are going to swing by MEC tomorrow to exchange it for the next size up. It won't weigh any significant amount more since I don't plan to bring any more stuff, but it will let me bring home presents!

ok, regarding this book thing... I realize I'm a little late to weigh in but in my experience, you don't want anything too long, intense or (physically) heavy. When you're traveling, you need to totally immerse yourself in what you're seeing and experiencing. Have a light read for the times you need a little break, but the project isn't reading, it's experiencing the world, face to face. I think a journal would be more valuable while traveling than any book... oh wait, you have this blog...

Happy Trails!

Hi Ang :)
It's not intense at all, just lengthy, which I like since it means I won't finish it in a week. I always read before going to bed, so I need to bring something..

I'm impressed by your selection of The Scientists - even if the book is not that intense, you're a lot more ambitious than I would have been! It's good that you'll have the opportunity to trade in your other book at hostels. It will be an interesting opportunity to see what others bring along on their travels.
If I don't get the chance to talk to you before you leave, have a great trip!

I'm definitely way to late leaving this comment here, but I DEFINITELY had the same backpack problem. (I mailed souvenirs and presents home in packages.)
